The consortium is a joint research group comprised of nurse faculty from the College and nurses from Pitt County Memorial Hospital. Its initial purpose was to build an evidence base for the practice of bariatric nursing. As the group developed its research projects, the need for a nursing organization devoted to the morbidly obese patient became clear and the group moved to establish the NABN. Chair of the consortium, Mary Ann Rose, is the founding president of NABN. Her counterpart in the hospital, Daniel Drake, is the current NABN President. In awarding the prize, the American Nurses Credentialing Center, cited the group’s work in conducting studies and publishing papers, and also noted that “the National Association of Bariatric Nurses was a direct result of the Consortium’s work”. The Consortium was credited as “an exemplary model for partnership between a Magnet hospital and a school of nursing”. The Magnet Prize, supported by Cerner Corporation, is awarded annually by the ANCC.
